How Do I Quit Smoking

Are you a chronic smoker? Are you desperate to quit? Did you long for that moment when you held your first cigarette between your two fingers, desperately wanting to go back to that moment and change it? Smoking is primary cause for several Lifestyle Diseases, with Lung Cancer topping the list. Under stressful situations, people often fail to solve their problems and retort to smoking. It begins in the most lethal age, Teenage and starts to settle into your life. When they blow the smoke, they imagine poohing it into their problems or onto someone's face whom they dislike.

Smoking is injurious to health placards and signs are often neglected and it is very pathetic to see young men, particularly teenagers smoking cigarettes. Some think it's posh to smoke, some to beat stress and some blame it on their genes and go anyway. For all those, Problems await in the future and they are lethal in most cases. So, you should seriously consider quitting smoking, right now! Here are some tips I'd like to suggest,
  1. You are the best judge of yourself, So my first suggestion is to detail out a plan yourself. Be relentless on yourself and have the zeal for a No-Smoking Life.
  2. I have seen several people being very certain about quitting, but losing themselves to that 'This one's gonna be my last!'. They often have a plan in mind, but are unable to follow it; Reason - Addiction! To follow your plan, you have to Believe in Yourself! Believe that you can quit, given any circumstances! Mind you, it all starts with believing in yourself, if you are failing at this step, you cannot quit I guess.
  3. Relentlessly attack your plan by writing down all the benefits you'd get by quitting smoking. Some benefits would be; Live Longer, Live Better, Find a Mate more easily, Smell Better, Save money, Family etc. So many benefits to go with and all you need it stress on these benefits whenever you are facing a situation. Write down what's bad too and Read these points daily.
  4. This is very important too, Ask your family and friends (Non-smokers) to support you. Ask them to be wary of the behavioral changes in you, when in the initial stages of quitting. Ask them to be extremely supportive.
  5. How about a defined 'quit date'? It helps you reach your goal faster and better. Get a feel of how it'd feel after that day, a new beginning to your life.
  1. Like I always say in my other posts, Find another smoker who is trying to quit, A non-smoker buddy shall we say. Company always gives you motivation and you will get it done better.
  2. 'Cold Turkey'? Find the method that best suits you, gradually tapering off or cold turkey? The choice is upto you.
  3. Keep a small paper with you, so that you can read it whenever you are craving for one. Write down all the benefits of quitting smoking. You can also have a photo of your family too!
  4. Find something that replaces the 'position of the cigarette', something like a straw, that is in your fingers and in your mouth too.
  5. If you have someone very important to you, You can keep a picture of that person and write down, 'I'm quitting for myself and for you :)'. Helps you to a great extent!
  6. You can also write down some inspirational lines and quotes, that'll give you the vigor to quit.
  7. This is very important, Identify what triggers you to smoke. Is it stress? Is it the regular after meal one? Or Is it the late evening one after work? Be very tough on these triggers, if it is becoming impossible, you have to try alternative methods.
  8. Do you know that Water washes away a lot of chemicals from the body, particularly Nicotine. So drink a lot of water, It's good for you anyway!
  9. Keep your teeth clean. Enjoy the way they look and plan to keep them clean for a long time.
  10. Again, If you trying to cut back gradually be sure that you have a 'quit date'
  11. Visualize you becoming a complete non-smoker. Go deep into it and you will feel a great sense of urge in yourself to quit.
  12. You can also consult a physician. Support and guidance from a well-qualified physician gives you better chances.
  13. If Stress is the Primary cause of Smoking, Exercise and try to beat stress and if you already are a chronic, follow the steps above.
There are umpteen number of causes for why people smoke and umpteen number of ways to quit too. However it is with sheer determination and effort you will be able to put off smoking forever.
